Frances Button, editor and proofreader

Annoyed by inconsistencies and irritated by mistakes, Frances has done her utmost to eliminate errors in her 15 years as an editor and proofreader.

“Clarity of communication is vital, not only in written texts but also between colleagues and clients. I believe that a careful, thorough and tactful editor is a vital member of any creative team.”

Experience

An avid reader and regular museum visitor, Frances understands the importance of clear, informative and accessible text from the point of view of the end user. She has worked across a wide range of subject matter, from cycling guides, to history encyclopedias, to practical astronomy, via all manner of general reference works.

Checks: keeping an eye out for wayward grammar and inaccurate use of language; checking consistency and readability; correcting typographical errors.

Improvements: working to make the text as good as it can be; making sure information is presented clearly; ensuring illustrations enhance and complement the text.

An 'extra pair of eyes': spotting those little errors that mar a reader's experience and introduce an element of doubt - if this mistake has not been spotted, can we trust the rest of the information?
