Compton Verney: Inclusive Histories

Our challenge

How might we conduct and use interviews and oral histories about the founder of Compton Verney to develop an interpretive approach that reflects Compton Verney’s contemporary practice?

Gathering personal stories

Narrative Threads were commissioned by Compton Verney to sensitively interview and consult with those who knew the Gallery’s founder Sir Peter Moores, to discover his story, find his voice and explore how this was expressed. His drive for inclusivity shaped many of the projects he seeded, including Compton Verney — a unique art gallery immersed in historic surroundings in the heart of Warwickshire, aiming to break down barriers to connect non-traditional audiences to world-class art.

Sir Peter Moores

Finding and deepening connections

This project was realised at a time of great change, in the midst of a global pandemic and an intense period of reflection through Compton Verney’s work with Morris Hargreaves McIntyre and other consultants. As such, this report made strong connections between Sir Peter’s ethos, life and legacy and the Gallery’s vision for the future — cross-pollinating thinking, seeding ideas and interests and creating an original approach.

From institutional memories to shared values

The resultant report is now a part of Compton Verney’s institutional memory, helping shape their approach to interpretation and audience engagement well  into the future. Following this preliminary piece, Allison and Catherine have continued to work with Compton Verney, looking at ways to express core values through the visitor journey, wayfinding and interpretation.
